城门打开后，
薄伽丘带着一帮子意大利人
先走了进来；后面跟着法国人、
西班牙人、英国人、德国人……
还有一些其它欧洲国家的人
也三三两两混了进去，象散兵游勇。
只有英格兰的约翰·斯凯尔登不肯进城
他说：“你们全出去了，
总得留下一个来看守中世纪的祖坟吧！”
后代人后来把他们进去的那城
叫做“文艺复兴”；
石匠米开朗琪罗推开的那门叫
“文艺复兴之门”；
而约翰·斯凯尔登看守的古墓
到今天也还有人去观瞻。
